The Power of Complete Surrender: What Jesus Teaches Us About Giving Our All

Posted on July 13, 2025.

In Mark 12:41-44, we find Jesus observing people giving their offerings at the temple. While many wealthy people contributed large amounts, a poor widow gave just two small copper coins. Yet Jesus declared that she had given more than all the others because she gave everything she had.

This seemingly simple story carries profound implications for our spiritual lives today. It's not about money at all - it's about surrender.

What Does Jesus See That Others Miss?

Jesus wasn't just being nosy when he watched people giving their offerings. He was observing with divine insight, seeing beyond the surface to the heart behind each gift.

When the widow gave her two small coins, Jesus called his disciples over to explain what had just happened. While others might have overlooked her tiny contribution, Jesus recognized it as the greatest gift given that day.

Why? Because she gave out of her poverty - she gave everything she had to live on. The wealthy gave from their abundance, but she gave from her need, demonstrating complete trust in God's provision.

How Does Jesus Weigh In On Our Lives?

This story reveals something important: Jesus has an assessment of our lives. He weighs in on what we do, how we live, and the motivations behind our actions.

The question is: do we want to hear what Jesus has to say about our lives?

Many of us are conditioned to expect only positive affirmation from God. We want the encouragement, hope, and joy. But those who truly follow Christ must also be willing to hear correction, direction, and truth - even when it's difficult.

Like Mary who responded to the angel's difficult news with "Be it unto me according to thy word," we must be willing to accept both the blessings and the challenges God brings our way.

What Is God Really Measuring In Our Lives?

When Jesus observed the widow's offering, He wasn't calculating dollars and cents. He wasn't impressed by the face value of those coins.

Instead, Jesus was measuring devotion.

He was looking at the sacrifice made and the obedience given. If the Lord measures us with that same standard, how do we rate? Can we honestly say we surrender all to Him - our heart, mind, and strength?

Too often, we give with a grudge. We surrender our time, talents, or resources reluctantly, complaining about the inconvenience. But true surrender means recognizing that everything we have already belongs to God. We're not giving away our time - we're giving away His time.

Why Do We Feel Like What We Have Isn't Enough?

One of the biggest obstacles to surrender is the feeling that what we have to offer isn't enough:

  • "I don't have enough time to make a difference."
  • "I don't have enough money to make an impact."
  • "I don't have enough talent or education."
  • "I'm not as charismatic or outgoing as others."

But God isn't asking if what you have is enough. He's asking if you're willing to give everything you have to Him.

The widow's offering wasn't enough to buy lunch or pay rent. It was a small amount by any financial standard. But when she gave all she had, it caught Jesus' attention.

How Does God Respond When We Surrender Everything?

When we surrender everything to God - just as we are, right now - it gets His attention. He doesn't turn us away or tell us to come back when we're better. He receives our surrender and fills in everything we lack with His abundance.

  • When we say, "God, I'm not strong enough," His response is, "My strength is perfect in your weakness."
  • When we say, "Lord, I don't have enough," He says, "I am more than enough for you.

It's not about our two pennies. It's about who we're giving them to. When we bring our "not enough" to God and add Him into the mix, it becomes more than enough.

Being a Christ-follower who doesn't surrender completely is like being hungry while sitting at a table with just three beans in your bowl, saying "It's not enough" - all while the pantry is overflowing with abundance.

Does God Need Our Abundance?

God is never impressed by how much we bring. He's not sitting in heaven thinking, "I'm so glad this person came to church today because they have so much to give!"

God lacks nothing. He doesn't need what we have. He can accomplish anything without our help.

What moves the hand of God is our complete surrender. Someone operating under God's anointing because they've given everything will accomplish more than someone with abundant talent who gives nothing.

It's not the size of our gift that matters:

  • It's not how long you pray, but how connected to God you are when you pray.
  • It's not how eloquent your words are, but whether you've been with the Lord.
  • It's not how much you have to give, but whether you're giving it all.

What Happens When No One Sees Your Sacrifice?

One of the most beautiful things you can do is serve privately, without recognition. Help someone without posting it on social media. Give anonymously. Serve quietly.

When we do things privately, we may not hear people on earth say, "Well done." But one day, we will hear the God who sees everything say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."

Help from God doesn't always come wearing a suit and tie or bearing the pomp and circumstance of religion. Sometimes it comes through unexpected people - those with biker jackets or tattoos who simply saw someone in need and offered help.

Life Application

This week, I challenge you to practice complete surrender in every area of your life:

  • Identify what you're holding back from God - your time, talents, resources, relationships, or future plans.

  • Surrender these areas completely, saying "Lord, I give this to you. It's yours to direct and use as you see fit."

  • When you feel inadequate, remember it's not about what you have, but who you're trusting.

  • Look for opportunities to serve others privately, without seeking recognition.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I measuring my worth to God by what I can give, or by my willingness to surrender everything?
  • What areas of my life am I still trying to control rather than surrendering to God?
  • How might God use my "not enough" if I give it completely to Him?
  • Where have I been saying "no" to God because I feel inadequate?

Remember, what we call "not enough" can shake heaven and earth when surrendered completely to Him. The areas of greatest success in your life may be precisely where you once said, "I will never" or "I can't."

When everything is surrendered to Him, God does incredible and awesome works through our lives.
