The Power of Complete Surrender Day 3
The Power of Private Devotion
Devotional
In our social media-saturated world, the temptation to publicize our good deeds is stronger than ever. We share our charitable giving, our volunteer work, and our spiritual insights—often with the best intentions of inspiring others. Yet Jesus points us to a different way. The widow in the temple didn't announce her offering. She didn't seek recognition or praise. She simply gave what she had in quiet devotion to God. And Jesus noticed. This teaches us something profound about authentic spirituality. Our most meaningful acts of devotion often happen in private, away from the applause and approval of others. When we serve quietly, give anonymously, or pray in secret, we demonstrate that our primary audience is God, not other people. Jesus commended the widow not because her gift was impressive to onlookers—it wasn't—but because it represented complete surrender to God. She wasn't performing for the crowd; she was expressing her devotion to her Lord. Today, consider how you might practice this kind of private devotion. Look for opportunities to serve others without recognition, to give without announcement, to pray without publicity. These hidden acts of surrender often have the greatest impact, both on our own spiritual formation and in God's kingdom work.
Bible Verse
"Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more money into the treasury than all the others." - Mark 12:43
Reflection Question
What is one way you could practice private devotion this week—serving, giving, or praying without seeking recognition from others?
Quote
"One of the most beautiful things that you can do is to do something privately and without recognition. I'm going to be good to somebody and I'm not going to put it on Facebook. I'm going to help somebody and I'm not going to tell anybody else about it. I'm just going to help them and stay quiet."
Prayer
Lord, purify my motives as I serve You. Help me to find joy in private acts of devotion that only You see. May I seek Your approval above all else, knowing that You reward what is done in secret. Amen.
